1984年-2002年之间在NBA征战，效力于休斯顿火箭队和多伦多猛龙队。在1994-95赛季，带领火箭连续两次获得NBA总冠军。 哈基姆·奥拉朱旺大学时就读于休斯顿大学。他在大学生涯中带领休斯顿美洲狮三度杀入到了最后的四强中。1984年NBA选秀大会上，奥拉朱旺被休斯顿火箭队在首轮第一顺位选中。加盟休斯顿火箭队后，奥拉朱旺被人送昵称“阿基姆-大梦”。1993-94赛季，带领火箭夺得总冠军的奥拉朱旺成为了NBA历史上首位在一个赛季同时问鼎MVP、最佳防守球员和总决赛MVP的球员。火箭则连续两度问鼎NBA总冠军，分别是战胜了拥有帕特里克·尤因的纽约尼克斯和沙奎尔·奥尼尔的奥兰多魔术。1996年，奥拉朱旺跟随美国梦之队夺得了奥运会金牌，此后又被选入NBA历史50大巨星行列。在他退役的时候，他是联盟的盖帽王。 2008年9月1日，奥拉朱旺正式入选NBA名人堂。

奥拉朱旺无所不能，他不仅在篮下独当一面，在禁区外的跳投同样准确无误，而且带球渗透的技巧和速度又和前锋队员一样灵敏而迅速。当然他最拿手的还是他和对手“单挑”时惯用的“大梦摆动”脱身术，而且屡试不爽。面对强敌，奥拉朱旺先是带球左右晃来晃去，然后以一只脚的脚尖为轴心，猛地一转身，便轻而易举甩掉对手，上篮得分。
