乔治·麦肯(George Mikan 1924年6月18日-2005年6月1日)，全名叫小乔治·劳伦斯·麦肯，2005年6月1日在亚利桑那州的Scottsdale去世，麦肯高中时先后在Joliet天主教学校和芝加哥Quigley Prep学校就读，大学就读于Depaul大学。1946年3月16日，麦肯和NBL球队芝加哥齿轮队签约，1947年齿轮队正式加入美国职业篮球联盟(PBLA)，但同年11月13日PBLA就宣告解散;11月17日麦肯转到NBL的明尼阿波利斯湖人队，1948年湖人队加入美国篮球联合会(BAA);1949年NBA将BAA和NBL吞并，湖人队也进入了NBA联盟。
' G4 m) u& D- c) A% F: j) i 鼻梁上架着一副笨拙的眼镜，6英尺10英寸(2米08)，身材偏瘦，然而穿着99号蓝色球衣的麦肯却以中锋的身份出现在球场上，作为白种人，麦肯有着斯文的脸庞，在篮筐下时，麦肯的动作也十分柔和，勾手命中率奇高，被人们喻为"温柔巨人"。同时，麦肯无限的创造力让篮球三秒区更加精彩，他带领湖人赢得了5个联盟总冠军，那时候，湖人还叫阿波利斯湖人队。1959年，麦肯入选美国篮球名人堂，一直以来，麦肯被认为是NBA50年历史上第一位真正意义上的超级巨星，事实上，3次全美大学生最佳球员、5枚NBA总冠军戒指、3次联盟最佳射手、2次联盟篮板王……最重要的是，为了限制麦肯在篮下的巨大威力，特意将三秒区的宽度由6英尺扩大为12英尺。7 \/ T# x- D8 A8 o7 I

在20世纪40年代后期到50年代初期，乔治·迈肯享誉篮坛，几乎成为篮球的代名词。那时观众人数最多的纽约尼克斯队主场麦迪逊花园体育馆，常常打出这样的广告--今晚篮球激战：乔治-迈肯VS尼克斯。正是因为他的威力，所以对手们只能通过让他受伤的办法阻止他进攻得分，为此迈肯的左、右腿都骨折过。
